The Department for Continuing Education offers over 800 courses across a full range subject areas. Each year we have over 15,000 student enrolments on our courses.

Our student population is diverse, ranging in age from their late teens to their late eighties. Students come from the local, national and international communities.

Academic support

We have three main academic units which serve our wide community of students. These units are:

The Department has 29 academic staff members who specialise in teaching adult learners, and who do research in their area of expertise. Read more in the staff and research sections of this site. Additionally, the Department engages over one hundred part-time tutors, many of whom come from professional organisations and industry, and bring us the most up-to-date developments in their chosen fields.

Our academic activities take place at three main locations: Rewley House and Littlegate House in central Oxford, and Ewert House in nearby Summertown, just north of town centre. We also run a growing number of courses outside Oxford - notably at Reading, where we offer 78 evening classes, and Maidenhead.

Facilities

In addition to our academic units, the Department has staff dedicated to catering and accommodation. We have excellent on-site dining facilities and 35 en suite bedrooms. Our accommodation has been awarded a three-star rating. Our facilities also include a lecture theatre, several lecture/seminar rooms, a library and a computer room.

Our IT staff and trained technicians serve the computing and audio visual capacity of our classesrooms and other facilities. Full information on our facilities can be found on our facilities and services pages.

The Rewley House Continuing Education Library, one of the Bodleian Libraries, exists to serve the needs of the Department's students. The library supports the wide variety of subjects covered by Departmental courses at many academic levels, ranging from weekly classes through to post-graduate studies. The collection contains around 73,000 books together with periodicals and a video/DVD collection of films and drama documentaries. Computer terminals in the Library give access to the internet and the full range of electronic resources subscribed to by the University of Oxford. The Jessop Reading Room adjoins the library. Full information about the Library can be seen on our Library pages in the students section of this site.

Partnerships

The Department participates in many partnerships and collaborations with the corporate and non-profit worlds in producing our course offerings. Notable partners include English Heritage, The National Trust and Oxford Archaeology.
