Support the department - Friends of Lifelong Learning
The Department has two organisations which enable members to support our work - the Friends of Lifelong Learning and the American Friends of Lifelong Learning.
The Friends of Lifelong Learning (UK)
For over 125 years Oxford University has been providing adults with the opportunity to study. The shared mission of the Department for Continuing Education and Kellogg College is to give more people access to Oxford learning by the provision of part-time and other flexible modes of education.
Lifelong Learning at the University is funded primarily by course fees and donations. The Friends play a key role in supporting lifelong learning at Oxford University, in particular through their support for facilities, library resources and student bursaries.
Aims of the Friends
- To provide bursaries in aid of students who would otherwise be unable to participate
- To support academic activities, such as lecture series, events and the development of new courses
- To offer input on future directions for lifelong learning at the University, including course development

The American Friends of Lifelong Learning
North Americans have always played a leading role in supporting Oxford's Lifelong Learning efforts. Kellogg - Oxford's only college for parttime and distance learners - was endowed by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science was founded by renowned computer scientist Dr. Charles Simonyi.
Each year hundreds of visitors from North America come to Oxford to take part in our summer school programmes, weekend events and short courses. By joining the American Friends you can support the full range of our international programmes, and can continue to be a part of the Oxford community year round.
Aims of the Friends
The American Friends help the University's Department for Continuing Education and Kellogg College to create flexible learning opportunities for a growing number of students worldwide, by supporting:
- bursaries in aid of students who would otherwise be unable to participate
- educational outreach efforts such as the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science
- research and development of accredited online and short courses
- academic activities, such as lecture series and public events
