Overview

A choice of 44 accredited one-week courses in a variety of subjects
13 July to 10 August 2013, Rewley House, Oxford

Join people from the UK, Europe and further afield for enjoyable, yet serious study with some of the finest tutors in the country. For over 100 years the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme has been making it possible for everyone to take advantage of the Oxford system of expert tuition in small groups. Our 2012 students’ comments provide one of the best insights into the programme:

''A wonderful experience which will be in my mind for the rest of my life.''

''It has been a very enriching experience – a kind of utopia of learning, reflection and new friendships. I will be back.''

''I loved the whole experience! I had a wonderful tutor and the social activities were fantastic.''

''The programme is the best of its kind with the balance between time spent studying the course, social events and enjoying the beauty of the University.''

During the summer school there are opportunities to visit Oxford's many sights. In 2012 students attended curator’s tours of art exhibitions, fine wine tasting with the University’s champion ‘blind taster’, as well as walking tours to Christ Church for Evensong.

Above all, at OUSSA, you will meet interesting people, develop new ideas and immerse yourself in learning. To learn more about the summer school, scroll through the programme’s webpages which are accessible to the left of this page.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1000 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1500 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is expected.

Teaching methods

All summer school courses are taught through group seminars (12 during the week) and individual tutorials (2 during the week). Students also conduct private study when not being taught and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research interests.

Accommodation

All bedrooms are modern, comfortably furnished, with tea/coffee making facilities, TV, telephone and private bath or shower rooms. We also offer a small number of de luxe bedrooms at Rewley House. These bedrooms are furnished to a higher specification than our standard rooms, eg flat-screen TVs and superior bedding.

The residential course fees include tuition, all meals and accommodation. Prices are per person/course and in 2013 will be as follows:
  • Single Room at Rewley House (standard room): £1,235
  • Single Room at Rewley House (de luxe room): £1,330
  • Resident couple at Rewley House (shared standard room): £1,020 per person
  • Resident couple at Rewley House (shared de luxe room): £1,110 per person
The fee to be a non-residential student, which includes lunch and dinner, is £590.

Please note: there is a supplement of £100 for non-EU students for each course they attend.

If you require shared accommodation you cannot enrol online. Instead, please download the application form, complete and email or post it to the OUSSA office. One application form should be completed for each enroling student.

If you have a specific question regarding accommodation please contact the summer school administrator: oussa@conted.ox.ac.uk

PLEASE NOTE: Due to an unprecedented response, accommodation is temporarily limited. However, accommodation suitable to your needs may still be available. If you are interested in attending a 2013 OUSSA course as a resident, download the PDF application form and return c/o OUSSA administrator via

Libraries

OUDCE has its own library at its home in Wellington Square. OUSSA students have full access to its resources whilst they are studying on the summer school. Each year the library acquires the books on the individual course reading lists. By the time OUSSA students arrive for their summer school the library has usually already acquired the books, students should however bear in mind that each year some books are not readily available or are out of print. Students can find out more about the OUDCE library here.

As well as using the OUDCE library, OUSSA students may wish to access the public library in central Oxford during their summer school course. The public library in Oxford has a particularly strong music collection, both scores and audio CDs, as well as books on Music, and of course other subjects. More information on the central library can be found here.

Please note: Students upon enrolling on an OUSSA course do not automatically gain access to the University of Oxford's main Bodleian library. Those students that are already enrolled at a recognised Higher Education institution are able to secure access on an individual basis free of charge during the Oxford vacation period, which happens to coincide with OUSSA. This does however require some planning in advance. The OUSSA office cannot facilitate students wishing to gain access to the main Bodleian library, but further information can be found here.

For those students wishing to purchase the books on their course reading list OUDCE advises that they first wait to receive confirmation that their course will go ahead. In the unlikely event that a course is cancelled students are notified in advance.

Scholarships

There is a limited number of bursaries available, which include those kindly donated by the Governing Body of Kellogg College, Oxford, and the Ruth Windsor Fund.

Bursaries are provided for UK applicants on low incomes or state benefits who wish to continue or resume studying. Bursaries will normally be offered to first time applicants to the summer school only. Please note that bursaries will not cover more than 50% of the OUSSA fee - and many students will receive less than this amount. Therefore, bursary applicants must be able to pay (at least) 50% of their course fee.

The deadline for bursary applications is 1 March 2013. Please contact the Programme Administrator by email at oussa@conted.ox.ac.uk to request an application form. Please note that evidence is required to support bursary applications (eg wage slips, details of income from state benefits, Council Tax bills), and applicants are therefore advised to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary paperwork.
