Overview
Uses the key principles of the major theoretical approaches as a framework for an understanding of how this informs the practice of coachingDescription
The course, although linked very strongly to the theoretical foundations of coaching psychology, is very much focused on how theory informs coaching practice.Each session will commence with an introduction to a different theoretical approach to coaching. The approach will be placed in the context of its historical development, its prominent thinkers and current uses.
In each case the core principles of each approach will be identified and linked to their application to the practice of coaching.
At all stages of the course students will be encouraged to reflect and share with the group their responses to all elements of the course both theoretical and practical.

Course aims
Course Aim:To allow students to develop their understanding of what coaching is from a theoretical and practical perspective.
Course Objectives:
1. To understand the key assumptions of the major theoretical approaches
2. To understand how these assumptions translate into the practice of coaching
3. To develop the students capacity for self reflection through dialogue, group discussion and practice sessions
Assessment methods
Students will be asked to identify what coaching means to them by selecting one of the modalities to which they felt particularly drawn and identify the key theoretical and practical assumptions of the modality. They will then be asked to demonstrate their reflective capacity by describing what drew them to chose this particular modality. (1000 words max.)Teaching methods
The different theoretical approaches will be introduced by way of powerpoint presentation and discussion during the first part of the session.The implications of these different theoretical perspectives and the implications for practice will then be practiced and reviewed in small and full class discussion.
Teaching outcomes
By the end of the course students can expect:1. To be able to understand and differentiate between the theoretical approaches to which they have been introduced.
2. To be able to demonstrate this learning by identifying the key principles of each approach.
3. To be able to understand how these principles relate to the practice of these approaches at a general level.
