Overview

Web design and development skills are much in demand. This course aims to provide beginners with the fundamental conceptual and practical skills needed to master the creation of basic websites.

Description

The ability to design, create and develop web sites using current standards has very rapidly become a high priority aquisition. This course aims to provide you with an introduction to the fundamental conceptual and practical skills necessary to design, develop and publish basic websites.

The course provides a hands-on practical introduction to web design and development through the use of HTML 5 and CSS 3. It is a 10-week course that covers the fundamentals of creating websites including an understanding of how the Internet works.

This beginner’s course is designed for students who have experience of using a computer and competence with Microsoft Windows. No previous experience of web design or development is assumed or required.

During the course students will undertake exercises to develop their understanding and confidence with the core concepts of web development using standards based methods and tools.

Programme details

Week 1: What is the Internet? What is the World Wide Web? How does a web browser display web pages? The structure of an HTML page. Clients and Servers.
Week 2: Creating a simple HTML page and displaying the content. Page structure using headings and paragraphs. Adding style with style sheets. Web browsers.
Week 3: File and folder organisation. Linking pages, cross referencing information and creating navigation links using hyperlinks. Document structure. Introduction to Dreamweaver.
Week 4: File transfer. Creating and applying style rules for colour and page layout.
Week 5: Embedding images and videos in pages.
Week 6: Adding lists to pages. The importance of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Week 7: Tabulated data – adding tables to pages. Mark-up Validation.
Week 8: Creating forms to capture data.
Week 9: Colour, more Forms and extra CSS.
Week 10: Standards, Usability and Accessibility. Web hosting and domain registration. Tools and Widgets.

Course aims

Course Aims:
This course aims to teach some key fundamentals of designing, developing, publishing and managing basic websites.

Course Objectives:
1. To develop an understanding of the basics of web development and the management of simple websites.
2. To develop an understanding of HTML5 and CSS3, and how to organise content following standards-compliant markup and practices.
3. To undertake weekly exercises applying technologies to solve simple problems in web design and development.

Assessment methods

Student's knowledge and understanding of the course material will be assessed through coursework and two short tests during the term. The coursework will be assigned early in the course, and is expected to continue throughout the term. The coursework will account for 80% of the total assessment, with 20% being allocated to class tests.

Assessment will be based on the demonstration of skills and an understanding of the topics, and on the ability to apply these in the creation of a web implementation using appropriate technologies.

Teaching methods

All classes will comprise a powerpoint presentation introducing each topic supported with discussion of some of the major issues and practical applications. Practical work will be assigned each week and this is expected to be continued in the students' own time in preparation for subsequent weeks

Teaching outcomes

By the end of the course students will be expected to:
1. demonstrate the ability to design, develop and implement a simple website using HTML5
2. demonstrate knowledge of key principles and technologies in basic website design, such as the purpose and application of HTML and CSS
3. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current development in web design and web standards
