Overview
This course is for anyone who would like to teach the grammar of their own language or a language they are fluent in. It will give an introduction to analysing grammar for teaching purposes and to different theories and methods of grammar teaching, and will include hands-on practice in class. It will follow on from Introduction to Language Teaching 1: Essential Techniques, but can also be taken as a stand-alone course. No previous experience of language teaching is necessary, only the desire to teach. Participants who attend over 80% of the course will receive an attendance certificate at the end of the course.Description

Participants who attend over 80% of the course will receive an attendance certificate at the end of the course.Topics will include: theories of learning grammar; analysing grammar for teaching purposes; how to present and practice grammar points: grammar tests; and error correction.
There will be one assignment during the course and short weekly readings. The teaching will be a mix of mini-lecture, discussion, DVD observation and pair and groupwork and you will have the opportunity to teach a little of your language to small groups of other participants. All participants who attend at least 80% of the course will receive an attendance certificate at the end of the second term.

Week 9: Error correction. Peer Teaching
Week 10: Testing grammar. Revision and consolidation

Course aims
Course Aim:This is a practical course, suitable for people of all nationalities, which will introduce you to basic principles and techniques used in teaching grammar. You do not need any previous experience of language teaching, only the desire to teach a language you are fluent in. The course is taught entirely in English and you will need IELTS 5.5 or equivalent level.
Course Objectives:
1. To introduce participants to current theory and practice in grammar teaching.
2. To develop participants' skills in planning and teaching grammar classes
3. To help participants to gain an awareness of their own teaching potential and of how they can develop this further.
Assessment methods
1000 word-assignment describing a group of learners and writing a grammar lesson plan for them including some materials production.Teaching methods
Teaching will be a mix of interactive lecture, discussion, DVD observation, pair work and group work. There will be short reading assignments each week in preparation for the class. Participants will carry out peer teaching in small groups.Teaching outcomes
By the end of the course students will be expected to:1. have a basic understanding of current grammar teaching principles and methodology.
2. have a basic knowledge of how to:
- analyse grammar for teaching purposes
- plan grammar activities and classes
- present and practice grammar using a range of techniques and activities, and with the needs of learners in mind.
3. have a preliminary insight into how to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in their own teaching and how they can develop beyond the course.
