Overview

When and how the English novel came into being has been hotly debated. What is not in question is that early examples are experimental, exciting, and endlessly fascinating. This day school will examine some iconic and some less well-known examples of the earliest forms of narrative fiction in English Literature.

Recommended reading

It will be useful to read some novels by the authors referred to in the lectures. This might include Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders; Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels, Henry Fielding, Tom Jones, and Laurence Sterne, Tristram Shandy. These are all available in (among other editions) Oxford World’s Classics and Penguin editions.
