Overview

The Victorians were fascinated by tales of the supernatural. This day school will trace the rise of the ghost story, from its origins in Gothic fiction to its subtler, more subjective manifestations. After an overview of the ghost story’s Victorian heyday, we shall offer talks on classic works by three authors (Sheridan Le Fanu, Charles Dickens and Henry James). Speakers will provide a close analysis of the texts and an account of their relevant contexts. Join us for an exciting discussion of some spine-tingling masterworks.
