    A wide-ranging and deep study of Joseph Conrad’s masterpiece, ‘Nostromo’, a novel that combines politics, money and idealism with adventure and revolution. Characters confront devastating choices in writing of great beauty and power.
  • Literature of Money and Morals
    A course on our complicated relationship with money as explored in multi-layered works by Shakespeare (‘Merchant of Venice’), Jane Austen, Balzac, (‘Pere Goriot’) Dickens (‘Dombey and Son’), Henry James, Chekhov (‘The Cherry Orchard') and others.
  • EM Forster and David Lodge
    A close study of the five novels Forster published in his lifetime and The British Museum is Falling Down, Changing Places, Small World and Nice Work by David Lodge.
  • The Country-House Novel
    Life in a large country house is of enduring fascination. This course will explore that fascination through the depictions of country house life found in the novels of authors as diverse as Jane Austen, Wilkie Collins and Evelyn Waugh.
  • Russian Short Fiction from Turgenev to Bulgakov
    Novellas and stories by Russia’s finest writers: ‘First Love’ by Turgenev, ‘The Cossacks’ by Tolstoy, 'The Steppe' by Chekhov, stories by Leskov and Bunin, ‘Heart of a Dog’ by Bulgakov. Lyrical, shocking, vivid and hilarious.
