Overview

This is a course for learners who have intermediate knowledge of Latin and is suitable for those who have completed Latin 2. We will use sections 5 and 6 of Jones and Sidwell's 'Reading Latin'

Description

This course builds on Latin 2 but is also suitable for people wishing to refresh their Latin. The group size will be kept small (typically between 10-15) to allow plenty of opportunity for exchange between tutor and students. We will be following the final chapters of Jones and Sidwell's lively textbook Reading Latin, using unadapted extracts from ancient authors. It is expected that students beginning the course will be familiar with all the main grammar of Latin and will be ready to practise constructions using the subjunctive and advanced syntax. Students will be expected to prepare work and study at home.

Course aims

Course Aim:
Students will become complete their understanding of Latin grammar and syntax and develop their understanding of Roman culture though original texts. They will gain a strong working vocabulary and be confident in tackling unadapted Latin. Latin scansion will be introduced.

Course Objectives:
1. To cover through translation and exercises the topics as outlined below, and to learn the vocabulary accompanying these sections of Reading Latin.
2. To develop understanding of the Roman cultural world through discussion of the texts and their context.

Assessment methods

Assignments for formal assessment will consist of a short passage of graduated translation (approx 70%) and a number of questions designed to test grammar which will usually include short sentences for translation into Latin. There will be four such assignments each term

Teaching methods

We will combine a variety of styles, including round the class translation and discussion. Students will need to prepare work at home

Teaching outcomes

By the end of the course students will be expected to:
1. Have the experience of reading short passages of unadapted Latin with confidence;
2. Understand simple texts, elicit information from texts in advance of their level, and produce very short texts using the vocabulary and grammar set, without recourse to a dictionary;
