OverviewAll the Department’s language courses are designed to help you communicate in a friendly atmosphere with an emphasis on pair and group interaction. The focus is on speaking, listening and the exploration of culture and society, backed up by an understanding of grammar. Students will be encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills in their own time and regular assignments will be set. Choosing your level.

Course aimsAll the Department's language courses are designed to help you communicate in a friendly atmosphere with an emphasis on pair and group interaction. The focus is on speaking, listening and the exploration of culture in society, backed up by an understanding of grammar. Students will be encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills in their own time and regular assignments will be set.
Chinese 2 is to continue from Chinese 1 and use the same text series 'Kuaile Hanyu(Happy Chinese)', v 2
Assessment methodsMost tutors will set weekly assignments to consolidate learning and allow students to study at their own pace. Some of these assignments, which may include testing listening and speaking skills, will count towards formally assessing the studentsí progress.
At Stages 5 & 6, students can expect to be assessed on either one 1,000 word essay or two shorter ones written in the target language.
At lower stages, students are required instead to submit for assessment a range of exercises and/or shorter pieces of work.
Teaching methodsLanguage classes are kept small (typically 10-15 students) in order to ensure plenty of opportunities for interaction in the target language, leading to the development of listening and speaking skills, as well as an understanding of grammar.
Teaching outcomesThe following are brief indicators of what students should be able to do in each of the skills
Speaking (S), Listening (L), Reading (R), and Writing (W) by the end of the individual stages:
For beginners and false beginners.
No previous knowledge required.

L understand simple messages and conversations

W produce short texts
S participate in simple prepared discussions
L understand simple recorded material
R understand the gist of magazine articles and simple texts
W write informal letters and descriptive paragraphs
S communicate clearly in a wide range of situations
L listen intensively and listen for pleasure
R enjoy reading simple texts without dependence on a dictionary
W summarise and produce short narratives
S communicate confidently in a wide range of situations
L understand specific information contained in authentic material
R understand the content of texts/articles of varying complexity
W write simple discursive essays
S express and defend own opinion on various issues
L understand most of what is said in informal and formal situations
R understand gist, detailed content and register of most texts
W write texts on a range of subjects using appropriate language

Apply for this course
All language courses will be offered for a third term, commencing in April 2013. Enrolled students who wish to sign up for the third term will receive a discount of £45.00 to the full fee if they do so before December 1 2012. The full cost of the third term is £145.00; the reduced price is £100.00.
PLEASE NOTE - It is not possible to enrol online for the Third Term at the discount rate. Please use the pdf application form below, entering your choice of course as, for example, French 1a Third Term and send it to the Weekly Classes Office along with your payment.
Note that this should be done AFTER you have enrolled for the first two terms of the course.
