  The Civil Wars which swept across the British Isles in the seventeenth century left few lives untouched. This course will explore the causes, conduct and significance of the English Civil Wars

  In addition to tracing the evolution of the modern state and political ideas and ideologies, the course focuses on issues that confront people from all parts of the World on a day-to-day basis.
• The Byzantine World: An Introduction
  The course will offer an overview of the political, ecclesiastical, social and cultural history of the Byzantine Empire, the most long-lived empire in the history of western civilisation.
• Beyond the Western Front: the First World War in Other Theatres
  As the centenary of the First World War's outbreak approaches, this course will study its global dimension by considering conflicts outside the Western Front - in Eastern and Southern Europe, Africa, the Ottoman Empire, the Far East, and at sea.
