Overview

In association with ‘The Professions in Nineteenth-Century Britain’ research project The middle class were a diverse subset of Victorian society, encompassing, at one end of the spectrum, the wealthy manufacturers and businessmen who were at the forefront of industrialisation, and at the other end individuals of more modest means such as teachers, shopkeepers and nonconformist ministers. This day school provides an introduction to recent research on the working, domestic and political lives of the Victorian middle class, bringing together historians working on subjects including the Victorian professions, the political culture of middle class women and middle class domestic interiors.
