We shall explore the history and architecture of Oxford, and in particular the extraordinary group of historic colleges of the university, dating from the 13th to the 21st century; with illustrated talks and walks on foot through and around Oxford.
- Monastic Architecture in England
Abbeys created by the monastic orders in England, from Canterbury to Fountains in Yorkshire, include a remarkable number of buildings which have survived Henry VIII’s Dissolution - we will examine the wealth of architectural styles adopted by these orders
- Castles in Britain
The building of castles after 1066 reflected the imposition of a new feudal aristocracy upon English society. This course will explore the evolution of castles and their changing military, administrative and domestic roles during the Middle Ages.
- Undergraduate Diploma in English Local History
The Diploma in Local History is a part-time, modular course, lasting two years. It is at second-year undergraduate level. The course covers the main themes and sources of English local history and the techniques needed for interpreting historical evidence
