  • Idiosyncratic English Originals: English Painting from Wright to Roberts
    We shall examine the nature of English painting from 1760-1940 from the standpoint of the idiosyncratically original quintessentially English vision and imagination. We shall highlight, among others, Wright of Derby, Blake and Stanley Spencer.
  • MSt in Literature and Arts
    A two-year part-time MSt Degree in interdisciplinary studies in literature and arts in 4 x 5 day residences and 2 online modules. Students select 2 options from each of 3 periods of English history and assessment is based on 4 essays and a dissertation.
  • Five Young Artists on the Eve of the Great War
    In the centenary year of The Great War, we look at the group of highly-promising young artists who featured in John Currie’s 1912 painting “Some Later Primitives”. Mark Gertler, Richard Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth each encountered triumph and disaster.
  • Six English Medieval Abbeys in Context
    Between 1540 and 1542 Henry VIII elevated six former abbeys to the rank of cathedral.
  • Bellini and Mantegna
    Renaissance painting in northern Italy was defined by Giovanni Bellini in Venice and Andrea Mantegna in Padua and Mantua. This course explores the artistic encounters between these two artists within the contexts of Italian city states and courts.
