Overview
Hans Holbein has given us our lasting image of the Tudor Court: ruthless courtiers, beautiful or pensive women, and Henry VIII himself in arrogant, portly splendour. His portraits captivate us by their realism. But behind the apparent realism lies a stylised and illusionistic world for us to explore. This day school outlines Holbein’s career and reveals some of his repertoire of tricks through close study of his paintings. We’ll start by looking at Holbein’s early career in Europe, where he learnt his skills and perfected his style. We’ll then study his two visits to England, his work for the court, and his portraits of foreigners in London. Amongst the paintings we’ll look at are The Ambassadors, full of symbols and hidden meanings, The Whitehall Mural, with its defining image of Henry VIII, the enigmatic portrait of Georg Gisze, where the merchant’s certainties seem to crumble in front of us, and Holbein’s many delicate but powerful depictions of Tudor courtiers.Programme details
