Overview
Painters have always been the best printmakers, bringing their experience of using pigment to conjure mass, space, light and dark to the austere discipline of mark-making with a graver or etcher’s needle. The patterns and textures they devised to this end are far more interesting than the regular mesh of lines produced by reproductive printmakers. Before the introduction of photo-mechanical reproduction, painters also depended on prints to broadcast their pictorial innovations and secure their reputations, so they are usually carefully considered. Yet today prints are neglected, since the light-sensitive nature of paper prevents their permanent display in museums. Patrick Doorly’s lectures will seek to remedy this neglect, while setting autograph prints in the context of their prevailing culture.Programme details
