Overview
The declaration of the First Crusade by Pope Urban ii in 1095 marked a dramatic change in the relations between Christians and Moslems. This course will examine the nature of those changes against the background of a series of bloody religious wars. The First, Third and Fourth Crusades will be covered in detail. The development of crusade out of pilgrimage will be discussed, as will castles, the role of the Knights Templar and the nature of crusader warfare. The relevance of the Crusades in the modern world will also be debated. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion throughout the day.PLEASE NOTE: THE VENUE FOR THIS COURSE IS NEWBURY COLLEGE, MONKS LANE, NEWBURY
