Overview

This course considers the interplay between archaeology and museums.We will cover a range of current themes, including: the display of human remains, archaeological/museum education and how museums tackle the presentation of contested sites and artefacts

Description

This course considers the discipline of archaeology as it affects museums and how museums impact on how archaeology is displayed, interpreted and understood. Our coverage will include the following topics: archaeological collections, human remains, contested artefacts, archaeological/museum education, the visiting public and the design of museum exhibitions. The course includes visits to the Ashmolean Museum and Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford and a full-day trip to The British Museum and either the Museum of London or Petrie Museum in London.

Week 1: 30th April - Introduction to the course
Week 2: 7th May - How musuems educate archaeology and the concept of the archaeological collection
Week 3: 14th May - The issue of human remains
Week 4: 21st May - Contested sites and artefacts
Week 5: 28th May - Fiedltrip to the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)
Week 6: 4th June - Fieldtrip to the Pitt Rivers Museum (Oxford)
Week 7: 11th June - Designing a museum exhibition
Week 8: Course Summary

In addition there will be a Saturday field trip to London to visit the museum of London, British Museum and perhaps the Petrie Museum. Date to be agreed with the class in the first session.

Course aims

Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the subject of archaeology and museums and consider the key concepts, methods and theories that provide the framework for our understanding of it.

Course Objectives:
1. To familiarise students with topics and issues that characterise the topic of archaeology and the museum
2. Develop skills in and approaches to an understanding of the central tenants of the topic and identify some of the key issues relevant to the study archaeology and the musuem
3. Encourage students to develop their interests through class sessions, museum visits and further study

Assessment methods

You have a choice as to the assessment format. This might be an essay of c.1000 words or a collection of several short written pieces e.g. museum reviews. I will provide a list of topics, although you may select your own relevant topic . Guidance will be provided throughout the term

Teaching methods

The course will be taught using a range of teaching strategies and methods. This includes lectures, question and answer sessions, discussion, practical sessions, as well as encouraging reflection, independent study and coursework participation.

Teaching outcomes

Having successfully completed the course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of the central tenents of archaeology and the museum
2. be aware of the breadth of the field of study
3. understand the key issues relevant to the study of archaeology and the museum
