Overview

The medieval Thames Valley was a long-settled, prosperous and strategically important region of England. Its countryside was organised into productive agricultural units. Markets and towns supported trade, and castles, abbeys, palaces and hunting parks reflected the power of the privileged elite. Archaeologists and historians are increasingly interested in what these places can tell us, individually and in combination in their contemporary landscapes, about how medieval people saw their world. During this weekend, we will be exploring the Thames Valley from the points of view of different medieval communities and individuals. How are the conflicts and outsize personalities of the Anglo-Norman elite reflected in the Domesday and Anarchy geography of the valley? Who were the landlords and the peasants, and how did they work and live together in the countryside? Who were the artisans and the merchants of the medieval Thames Valley, and what can we learn about them today? How are current research projects in the region giving a voice to some of the less well known groups in medieval society?
