Philosophy of religion seeks to rationally examine the ideas which are central to religious faith and practice. Description
Philosophy of religion seeks to rationally examine the ideas which are central to religious faith and practice. On this course we will examine, from a neutral standpoint, arguments for and against Gods existence, and investigate concepts and ideas which enable students to develop a deeper, more complex, understanding of God and religion.Topics examined include: whether the evil in the world shows that God does not exist; the relationship between science, evolution and religion; why there is something rather than nothing; the argument from design; Pascals Wager; the relationship between morality and religion; and the nature and significance of tradition, ritual, symbol, mystery and wonder.
This course will appeal to all those who enjoy reasoning and discussion, and who wish to go beyond the shallow, simplistic sound-bites that characterise media discussions of religion.

Does the evil in the universe indicate that God did not create the universe?
11.00am Coffee/tea
11.10am Does the evil in the world indicate that God cannot intervene in the physical universe or affect people’s thoughts and decisions?
12.30pm Lunch
1.30pm Do science and evolution indicate that there is no God? To what extent can (and should) religion and religious faith be modified in response to scientific and philosophical progress?
2.30pm Tea/coffee
2.40pm Why is there something rather than nothing?

SATURDAY 18 MAY 2013
9.45am The argument from design. Can science explain freedom, consciousness, goodness, beauty and love? Is God an explanation for things which cannot be explained scientifically?
11.00am Coffee/tea
11.10am What is the relationship between morality, God and religion? Should you see the world, and people, as good? Why? Does what you do matter absolutely? Why?
12.20pm Lunch
1.20pm Pascal’s Wager: Should you bet on it? ‘The Inquirer’s Wager’: The importance of seeking out valuable new experience. What is ‘religious experience’?
2.35pm Tea/coffee
2.45pm Tradition, Ritual, Symbol, Mystery, Wonder and the Absolute. Is religion a way of engaging with things which go beyond science, ethics and reason?
3.45pm Course disperses
No lunch is provided, but there is a shop on site where you can buy food and refreshments or bring your own.
There is also a large car park on site where you may park all day for no charge.
