Overview

Philosophy of religion seeks to rationally examine the ideas which are central to religious faith and practice. It examines, from a neutral standpoint, arguments for and against God’s existence, and helps students develop a deeper, more complex, understanding of God and religion.

Description

Philosophy of religion seeks to rationally examine the ideas which are central to religious faith and practice. On this course we will examine, from a neutral standpoint, arguments for and against God’s existence, and investigate concepts and ideas which enable students to develop a deeper, more complex, understanding of God and religion.

Topics examined include: whether the evil in the world shows that God does not exist; the relationship between science, evolution and religion; why there is something rather than nothing; the argument from design; Pascal’s Wager; the relationship between morality and religion; and the nature and significance of tradition, ritual, symbol, mystery and wonder.

This course will appeal to all those who enjoy reasoning and discussion, and who wish to go beyond the shallow, simplistic sound-bites that characterise media discussions of religion.
