In this introduction to ethics, we shall examine four important ethical theories, applying them to two practical questions: the rights of animals and euthanasia. There will be plenty of opportunity to engage in debate and test your own thinking.
- Treat Others as you would like them to treat you: The Key to Ethics?
First we analyse this maxim. Then we build on it aided by great philosophers of the past & recent research. We then apply these ideas to issues such as love, friendship, future generations, difficult people, dilemmas, careers, business & weakness of will.
- Moral Emotions and Intuitions
To what extent should we rely on our emotions and intuitions (or gut feelings) when making moral decisions?
- Philosophy of Mind (Online)
The philosophy of mind is concerned with questions about the nature of mind and the relation between our minds and the physical world. This course provides is an introduction to the mind-body problem, one of the most intractable problems in philosophy.
- The Philosophy of Emotion
Emotions are central to human life, but why they are so important is an open philosophical question. Through reading philosophical texts and engaging with art, we will come to our own conclusions about the role emotion plays in our lives.
