Overview
In our day together we shall map 20th-century psychological notions of self with traditional Christian understandings from writers such as the desert fathers and mothers, Ignatius of Loyola and the Spanish Mystics. We shall begin by looking at early Christian notions of the ‘self’ and ‘soul’ from the Desert Tradition before relating this to Freudian and Jungian notions of self. We shall also relate these ideas to those found in the writings of the Spanish mystics, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and Ignatius Loyola. The day will consist of lectures, group discussion and an audio-visual presentation. No prior knowledge will be assumed.Programme details
