Overview

Covers the basic concepts that underlie harmony. We will work examples based upon models from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods, but with an emphasis on the harmonic language of Bach.

Description

In this course we will be practising examples based upon models from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods, but with an emphasis on the harmonic language of Bach. The course will start by covering the basic concepts that underlie harmony and will then proceed to work exercises in chord progressions.
From here we will move on to the harmonisation of a melody, both homophonically and polyphonically, and this will lead up to exercises in Bach’s chorale harmonisations.

Programme details

Week 1: Consonance and dissonance. Different classifications through musical history.
Week 2: Intervals, triads and their inversions
Week 3: Chord progression. Common cadences.
Week 4: The relationship between harmony and melody. Non-harmonic notes.
Week 5: The classification of non-harmonic notes. Examples in baroque and classical repertoire.
Week 6: Harmonising a simple melody - I
Week 7: Harmonising a simple melody - II
Week 8: Chromatic chords
Week 9: Articulating key change using functional harmony
Week 10: The relationship between harmony and counterpoint

Course aims

Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to enable students to write fluent chord progressions and harmonise simple melodies.

Course Objectives:
1. To introduce the basic concepts of consonance and dissonance
2. To explore the principles of harmonic progression
3. To introduce the principles that underly the harmonisation of simple melodies.

Assessment methods

Assessment will be through the medium of worksheets that will assist the students to consolidate the knowledge of harmony that they have gained in class.

Teaching methods

The course will be fully illustrated by audio extracts. All scores and other illustrations will be projected on to a large screen as well as given in handouts. Audio recordings will be played through high quality hi-fi. In the musical explanations the tutor will play passages on the piano to provide clear aural comparisons.

Teaching outcomes

By the end of the course students can expect to:
1. work exercises in harmony
2. identify the approximate historical period from which a harmonisation comes
3. harmonise a simple melody
