Using music and film, this course tells the amazing story of the legendary first performance of Stravinsky’s modernist milestone ‘The Rite of Spring’ in Paris, 1913 and its aftermath.

This is a practical course for those interested in composing music of any genre. It will cover the skills common to all composition but will concentrate upon instrumental composition.
- The Beatles, Popular Music and Sixties Britain
Learn how the Beatles made their music, and trace its development from simple first recordings to the multi-track Abbey Road. Their music is contextualized with songs by other British groups of the period, poetry, journalism, and key events.
- The Bach Cantatas
Bach’s church cantatas contain some of his greatest music: immensely varied, they combine supreme technical mastery with an at times romantic intensity of expression. The variety of ways Bach uses to heighten the meaning of the text will be examined
- Musical Analysis - Romantic to Modern
Studying one work each week, a wide range of music will be analysed - concentrating on works from the Romantic and Modern periods. Different works may require slightly different approaches but common principles of analysis will be developed.
