  • Britten and the English String Quartet
    Britten’s three string quartets offer an important insight into his musical language.
  • The Philosophy of Music
    The Philosophy of Music asks fundamental questions about music and our experience of it. Why do we find music valuable? What is a musical work of art? How can music express emotion? Does it express emotion? What is it for music to be beautiful?
  • The Handel Oratorios
    This course aims to place Handel's English oratorios in the context of his creativity within the period 1732-51. All 17 of these works will be discussed, but there will be special focus on the dramatic oratorios, Saul, Samson, Solomon, etc.
  • The Operas of Mozart
    Mozart, building upon the reforms of Gluck, laid the foundations of modern opera. We will study his early works, the great comedies written with Da Ponte, and his contribution to the emerging school of German opera.
  • Music and Nationalism (2)
    In the early 20th century, many composers continued to incorporate specifically national themes into their compositions whilst other strands of modernism development. The course will explore the gradual redefinition of nationalism in art music.
