Fundamental Characterisation for Nanotechnology

This online course provides a justification for materials characterisation, and a framework for considering strategic and tactical issues. It also gives an overview of the most common techniques and methodologies available to determine the nature and composition of nanoparticles (both organic and inorganic), thin films and nano-structures.

The course presents generic descriptions of techniques and methodologies, together with representative case studies. In addition to the course material and online tutorials, the course incorporates interactive team-projects, whereby iterative 'proposals' are presented to experts, who then provide feed-back and guidance for further development. The course includes a residential weekend in Oxford where students have an opportunity to see the latest characterisation methods at Oxford University Begbroke Science Park.

The Fundamental Science of Nanotechnology

Particles and structures at the nano-scale demonstrate phenomena not seen at other length scales. This online course is designed to cover the science behind the phenomena that arise when considering materials at the nano scale. It provides a good grounding in the scientific equations and principles that an understanding of nanotechnologies requires. In this module we also consider some of the common nanostructures that are currently being developed and used in nanotechnology applications such as quantum dots, nanotubes and fullerenes, together with their applications including Quantum computing.

The Wider Context of Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is the identification, application and use of novel behaviour that occurs at the nano-scale to solve real-world problems. The discipline requires a breadth of understanding that is much wider than just the equations and scientific principles that underlie that behaviour. This introductory course gives an overview of the current state of the technology as well as introducing the implications of these new technologies for safety, regulation, innovation. The course will give an overview of the societal and environmental implications of nanotechnology.
