Online courses in climate change modelling for the developed and developing world delivered by the University of Oxford and the UK Met Office.

For those working in government, industry, risk analysis, consultancy, academia and NGOs who need to develop their understanding of regional climate change modelling and to interpret projection data. Of the two online courses, the first is free, and for the second eligible students receive a bursary. All students and contributors are encouraged to join the Programme’s global online community, where members exchange knowledge and experience of climate modelling and related issues.

Course 1 (An introduction to the science of climate and climate change) examines the steps from atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases through global climate change to regional details ('downscaling'), and introduces regional climate models and other concepts, such as 'SRES' emissions scenarios and ensemble modelling for experimentation.

Course 2 (Constructing and applying high resolution climate scenarios) explores how global and regional climate change information can be used to produce various impacts models via ‘downscaling’ and climate scenarios to give regional communities and decision-makers the climate impacts information that they need.

These online courses have been developed together with the University of Oxford’s climateprediction.net group and the UK Met Office, and with financial support from the Natural Environment Research Council.
