Birsay-Skaill landscape archaeology, Orkney
David Griffiths (Project Director); Jane Harrison (Assistant Director /Excavation Supervisor); Sue Hanshaw (Environmental Supervisor)
A landscape investigation of the coastal environment at Birsay and the Bay of Skaill, Orkney [Scotland, UK], which began in 2003. Using extensive geophysics and selective excavation, we are investigating areas at long-term risk of coastal erosion and climate change. We are currently working on a major new cluster of viking-period buildings buried under wind-blown sand to the north of the Bay of Skaill. Fieldwork took place in August 2008, analysis is ongoing.

The Sangro Valley Project
Gary Lock (Co-Director)
The Project was conceived by John Lloyd with input from Gary Lock (both of the University of Oxford), Amalia Faustoferri and Cinzia Morelli (both then of the Soprintendenza Archeologica dell’Abruzzo) and fieldwork began in 1994. It concentrated on study areas within the Sangro valley, Abruzzo central Italy, selected to provide varying environmental conditions, namely the upper valley around the town of Opi and the middle valley focussed on the Samnite oppidum of Monte Pallano.

The South Cadbury Environs Project
Gary Lock (Co-Director)
One of Britain's most ground-breaking archaeological landscape surveys. With a fulltime staff the project is able to run throughout the year, providing excellent opportunities for those wishing to gain archaeological experience, whether as students or as enthusiasts looking to broaden their archaeological experience. The main period of fieldwork is now completed; analysis and publication is under way.

The Vale and Ridgeway Project (Marcham/Frilford)
Gary Lock (Co-Director)
These excavations are concentrating on the site of Marcham/Frilford, Oxfordshire, which is well known from previous excavations (see the interim reports for references) and often referred to as just ‘Frilford’. It is the site of a Romano-British religious complex overlying an Iron Age settlement.

The Museum of the White Horse
Gary Lock (Collaborating PI)
The Museum of the White Horse is a landscape museum housed in a converted horsebox made by the artist Tania Kovats when artist in residence at the Institute of Archaeology. The museum is Tania’s response to an archaeological interpretation of the Uffington White Horse, an ancient monument carved into the chalk downland in southwest Oxfordshire.
