English language requirement

English is the language of instruction for all programmes (apart from foreign language courses) offered in the Department for Continuing Education and it is mandatory that all assignments (apart from some language assignments) are written in English.

Award bearing programmes: undergraduate level

If English is not your first language you must supply suitable evidence (an original certificate that is not more than two years old and issued by a responsible body) that you have reached the Standard overall score, plus the additional requirement before you may be offered a place.

This requirement does not apply to the Advanced Diploma in British and European Studies. Please read the course information for details of language requirements for this course.

Award bearing programmes: postgraduate level

If English is not your first language you must supply suitable evidence (an original certificate that is not more than two years old and issued by a responsible body) that you have reached the Higher overall score, plus the additional requirement before you may be offered a place.

The University recognises only certain English tests and these requirements are set out in the table below:

Non-native speakers of English who have successfully completed a course of higher education in an institution where English is the principal medium of instruction or who have significant business and professional experience in an English-speaking environment may not need to apply for a certificate of English language qualification. Please contact us for further details.

Summer school applicants whose mother tongue is not English should check the language requirements of the particular programme to which they are applying, either on the individual programme web-pages available via the Summer School Programme Website or with the programme administrator.
