Overview

This one-day course introduces methodologies in technology valuation appropriate for the early stages of business growth and technology commercialisation.

These subjects are core to business success and consequently have attracted numerous studies.

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals and a practical guide to how and when these approaches can be applied.

Programme details

The course combines Oxentia’s expertise in commercialisation and start-ups, with industry best practice.

You will leave this course with an understanding of how and when to use appropriate valuation methodologies for your early stage technology or business.

We will show examples of how this applies when seeking to license a technology, or raise investment for a company.

This course was developed in conjunction with Oxentia, Oxford’s Global Innovation Consultancy, and utilises Oxentia's experience of helping clients commercialise technology and IP in over fifty countries around the world.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Context and detail of valuation, its uses and its limitations
  • Valuation methodologies including the following, with discussion on how and when they can be used:
    • Cost method
    • Market Approach (comparables)
    • Income Method - Discounted Cash Flow (DCF)
    • VC Method: Pre-Money and Post-Money Valuation
  • Exploration of the valuation methodologies above using practical, case-study based interactive exercises.

The course is likely to be particularly attractive to those seeking to understand and grow technology-based businesses, acquire valuable technologies, to maximise and de-risk returns on investment, and generally to upskill themselves in key issues of this important discipline.

Digital Certification

To complete the course, you will be required to attend and participate in all of the live sessions on the course in order to be considered for a certificate. Participants who complete the course will receive a link to download a University of Oxford digital certificate. Information on how to access this digital certificate will be emailed to you after the end of the course.

The certificate will show your name, the course title and the dates of the course you attended. You will also be able to download your certificate or share it on social media if you choose to do so.

Level and demands

This course focuses on approaches to valuation and marketing of early stage technologies and is agnostic to technology and industry sector. As such, the intended audience includes academics and entrepreneurs who are considering, or have recently started commercialising their inventions, technologies, or services. The course is not intended for professionals in the financial sector who focus on late stage valuation and investment.

Accommodation

Although not included in the course fee, accommodation may be available at our on-site Rewley House Residential Centre. All bedrooms are en suite and decorated to a high standard, and come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi access and Freeview TV. Guests can take advantage of the excellent dining facilities and common room bar, where they may relax and network with others on the programme.
