The new National Planning Policy Framework strongly encourages the creation of design codes for towns in the UK. This course explains the concept of design codes and gives practical advice about how to create successful codes. The first session introduces the theory and purpose of design codes including how they are different to design guides. The second session discusses the historic characteristics of English built environments from built form and building types to street design and layouts that might drive the creation of such codes. The third session suggests strategies for successful community engagement to create provably popular codes.
The second day consists of a practical design coding workshop led by urban designers with practical experience writing multiple design codes for councils in England.
The course will be delivered in a hybrid format. The first day is being offered for both in-person and online participants. The second day is offered for in-person participants only.
