Effective Leadership through Emotional Intelligence (online)

Overview

Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills are particularly good for: relationship management, conflict handling, building resilience, increasing engagement, and team building.  

Goleman (2000) was an early introducer of Emotional Intelligence to Leaders, particularly in the business field.  

Since then, our ideas and strategies for using EI have developed: we can confidently say that Leaders using EI skills have more engaged, more resilient, and more flexible teams.  

Leaders with higher EI are shown to make better decisions, build more stable, creative teams, and ultimately increase revenue. 

This course is a sister course to Advanced Emotional Intelligence Skills for Business (online) course, aimed at individual EI skills. Attendance on both courses is recommended to give a fuller understanding of EI and its Business and Leadership advantage. 

Programme details

This course explores some of the key skills required to build Emotional Intelligence into your Leadership style. Through challenging material, self- analysis and reflection, this course aims to increase self-awareness in relation to team performance, and begin to develop more effective Leadership skills.  

Key Themes 

  • Introduction to Emotional Intelligence for Leadership: key skills to manage yourself, and be an effective team leader 

  • Leadership styles: trying out different styles and working out whether they will work for you 

  • Key skills in EI for Leadership: dealing with conflict, good decision-making, and building resilience 

By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • Take the first steps in using Emotional intelligence for Leadership  

  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different leadership styles 

  • Be informed about key EI skills to help with conflict handling, increase resilience, and making better decisions 

Dates, Times and Delivery

This online course will be delivered over four sessions.

  • Workshops: Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 April 2024 (14:00-15:30, UK time)
  • Case Study activity session: Thursday 11 April 2014 (14:00-15:30, UK time)

You may be grouped into a smaller team for the case study activity and analysis.

To support the online sessions, you should actively engage in offline activities, such as the introductory tasks.

Please build in extra time around each online session to allow for any technical issues.

This is a ‘virtual classroom’ course, and is designed to replicate the experience of a classroom. The sessions are ‘live’ and are not recorded.

No attendance at Oxford is required and you do not need to purchase any software.

Digital Certification

To complete the course, you will be required to attend and participate in all of the live sessions on the course in order to be considered for a certificate. Participants who complete the course will receive a link to download a University of Oxford digital certificate. Information on how to access this digital certificate will be emailed to you after the end of the course.

The certificate will show your name, the course title and the dates of the course you attended. You will also be able to download your certificate or share it on social media if you choose to do so.

IT requirements

This course is delivered online using Microsoft Teams. You will be required to follow and implement the instructions we send you to fully access Microsoft Teams on the University of Oxford's secure IT network.

To participate you must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the Internet. You will also need regular access to the Internet and a computer meeting our recommended minimum computer specification.
It is advised to use headphones with working speakers and microphone.
