Intermediate Spanish: Active Learning, Part One

Overview

Join us to refresh your Spanish language skills and extend the contexts in which you use them. Through revisiting a range of topics, grammar structures and registers, you will enhance language skills through listening and speaking. In-class activities will aim to improve grammar accuracy, consolidate repertoire and further develop fluency for interaction in a variety of ways and for a range of purposes.

This course is part of a series of intensive consolidation and revision programmes at intermediate level. It consists of two courses which are offered in October and February each year. You are encouraged (but not required) to enrol on both to fully benefit from the learning experience.

The courses’ content is equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), though the group may have acquired the language in different settings and have different levels of achievement in the four language skills.

Successful completion of one course results in the award of 5 CATS points.

Programme details

Week 1:          Holidays and free time: simple past tense and expressing preferences.

Week 2:          Characters and character: personality and physical descriptions. Use of ser y estar.

Week 3:          Telephone conversations, social media and emails: the use of formal and informal language for different media.

Week 4:          Giving Advice, orders and instructions: the use of the conditional and imperative.

Week 5:          Fiestas, culture and traditions: learn to talk about cultural differences and make comparisons.

Certification

Students who register for CATS points will receive a Record of CATS points on successful completion of their course assessment.

To earn credit (CATS points) you will need to register and pay an additional £10 fee per course. You can do this by ticking the relevant box at the bottom of the enrolment form or when enrolling online.

Coursework is an integral part of all weekly classes and everyone enrolled will be expected to do coursework in order to benefit fully from the course. Only those who have registered for credit will be awarded CATS points for completing work at the required standard.

Students who do not register for CATS points during the enrolment process can either register for CATS points prior to the start of their course or retrospectively from between 1st January and 31st July after the current academic year has been completed. If you are enrolled on the Certificate of Higher Education you need to indicate this on the enrolment form but there is no additional registration fee.

Libraries

All weekly class students may become borrowing members of the Rewley House Continuing Education Library for the duration of their course. Prospective students whose courses have not yet started are welcome to use the Library for reference. More information can be found on the Library website.

Tutor

Dr Lorena Nessi

Lorena Nessi PhD is a Swiss Mexican journalist, researcher, and cultural sociologist. Her Bachelor's was in International Relations, Master’s degree in Globalization, Identity and Technology, and PhD in Communication, Sociology and Digital Cultures.

Course aims

1) To refresh, revise and/or consolidate prior learning of Spanish.

2) To extend the range of contexts in which Spanish is used.

Course Objectives

1) To further enhance confidence in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing through active participation in interactive activities and tasks.

2) To explore the manipulation of language for new purposes and wider contexts.

3) To improve grammar accuracy and fluency, and widen repertoire.

4) To develop the participants’ ability to plan their language so that they can present an argument or express a point of view in a coherent and persuasive manner.

Teaching methods

All the Department’s language courses adopt the communicative teaching method with a focus on interactive tasks and activities, role-plays, and pair/group work in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Students will be encouraged to participate and have fun.

The emphasis in class is on interacting in the target language, practising listening, speaking and grammar structures, as well as exploring the culture. Students are encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills in their own time.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1) understand contemporary issues as perceived through Spanish eyes;

2) interact in a wider range of situations and for a variety of purposes;

3) use the language skills and grammar knowledge in a more confident and planned way; and

4) communicate more fluently and accurately in speech and writing to express, discuss, and argue opinions.

Assessment methods

Most tutors will set weekly assignments to consolidate learning and allow students to study at their own pace. Some of these assignments may count towards formally assessing the students’ progress.

In general, students are required to submit for assessment a variety of exercises and/or shorter pieces of work. Assessing listening and speaking may consist of in-class communicative activities ranging from guided role-plays and structured pair-work to less structured dialogues and open group discussions. Participants will have the opportunity to complete one or more optional tasks to benefit from tutor feedback.

Due to the continuous assessment required for language classes, students must submit one completed Declaration of Authorship form per term. CATS points cannot be awarded without the aforementioned form.

Credits gained from the successful completion of this course can count towards the Certificate of Higher education in other subjects.
