Introduction to Study Skills

Overview

A comprehensive introductory workshop for students entering or returning to academic study. The session will cover time-management, reading critically and selectively, taking notes, and planning and writing essays for undergraduate-level study.

If you have recently returned to study after a break or are planning to start a new course of study next year, you may find it useful to attend this introductory workshop. The session is designed to help you tackle your course effectively and will explore the full range of basic study skills needed in higher education.

We shall discuss common concerns and problems and explore ways of:

  • Organising your study routine to make the best use of time available.
  • Reading selectively and effectively in order to obtain and retain information.
  • Deciding when and how to take notes in seminars and whilst reading.
  • Getting to grips with essay questions and developing and structuring an argument.
  • Planning, writing and reviewing your essay.
  • Producing and presenting references and a bibliography.

Each session will include group and individual exercises to practice the skills discussed. Handouts will be provided for future reference.

Tutor

Mrs Anne West

Tutor

Anne West has been teaching Study Skills at OUDCE, both face-to-face and online, for over 10 years. The thought of spending a day with students teaching spelling, punctuation, grammar or any other aspect of written English fills her with joy. She believes that a piece of writing, at whatever level, deserves to be written and read, as clearly as possible, to give pleasure and satisfaction to both writer and recipient – and also to save a lot of time for both.

She’s also been involved with writing and editing for the BBC – children’s radio and TV.

Course aims

To identify, examine and practise the basic study skills required for undergraduate study.

Teaching methods

A range of teaching methods will be used including: mini-lectures, OHP presentations, elicit exercises, class discussion, small group discussion, group exercises and individual exercises. The workshop will be fully supported with handouts and students will be encouraged to discuss study problems and solutions and to practise new skills.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop students will have:

  • Explored a range of time management, critical reading, effective note-taking and essay planning and writing skills;
  • Practised note-taking, critical reading and essay planning and writing skills;
