Portuguese 2: Lower Intermediate

Overview

This interactive course further develops the participants’ language skills and understanding of the culture, society and daily life in the Portuguese-speaking countries.

To benefit from the course, students will have done one of the following:

  • completed Portuguese 1 or equivalent
  • gained a GCSE (Grade B or below) in Portuguese
  • achieved level A1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in Portuguese.

This elementary/lower intermediate level course is equivalent to level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It will further develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Portuguese in a range of predictable situations and familiarise students with a range of simple grammar structures. Through the exploration of Portuguese culture, students will broaden their understanding of the society and daily life in Portugal.

The class activities will focus on listening, speaking and cultural awareness; and students will be encouraged to practise reading and writing skills in their own time. There will be plenty of opportunities to interact in the target language through class activities, discussions, and role-plays.

Week 0: An Introduction to Teams – Course orientation

 

Week 1:    Já foste a alguma tourada? Introducing each other.

  • Talking about present and past events and experiences
  • Interviewing each other
  • Perfect Preterite of regular and some irregular verbs
  • Adverbs and adverbial phrases of time

 

Week 2:    Nunca fui nem hei de ir. Sou contra as touradas! Narrating past actions and expressing future intentions. Giving opinions and sustaining arguments.

  • Haver de + Infinitive
  • Useful phrases to express one’s opinion

 

Week 3:    Olá! Já preparei a festa e queria convidar-te! Remembering and celebrating important dates.

  • Vocabulary related to setting a table
  • Speaking on the phone
  • Some modal/ising verbs in the Perfect Preterite: conseguir, saber, poder
  • Expressing courtesy: card and phone messages

 

Week 4:    Querida Marta, estou de regresso a casa, já acabaram as férias... Writing letters and diaries.

  • Perfect Preterite of some irregular verbs
  • Personal pronouns – object.

 

Week 5:    Jornalista precisa-se. Applying for a job.

  • Writing a CV

Certification

Students who register for CATS points will receive a Record of CATS points on successful completion of their course assessment.

To earn credit (CATS points) you will need to register and pay an additional £10 fee per course. You can do this by ticking the relevant box at the bottom of the enrolment form or when enrolling online.

Coursework is an integral part of all weekly classes and everyone enrolled will be expected to do coursework in order to benefit fully from the course. Only those who have registered for credit will be awarded CATS points for completing work at the required standard.

Students who do not register for CATS points during the enrolment process can either register for CATS points prior to the start of their course or retrospectively from the January 1st after the current full academic year has been completed. If you are enrolled on the Certificate of Higher Education you need to indicate this on the enrolment form but there is no additional registration fee.

Tutor

Ms Ângela Sarmento-Dingsdale

Ângela Sarmento-D. is an experienced teacher of Portuguese for English speakers and of English as a foreign language. She holds a degree in Modern Languages and Literatures (Portuguese and English Studies) and an MA in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, from the University of Porto. During the curricular stage of her PhD, for two semesters, she attended courses at Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris), where she developed work in the field of Comparative Literature and Interartistic Studies. Currently, she is teaching Portuguese Language and Culture at the University of Oxford and is a research member of ILC-ML [Margarida Losa’s Institute for Comparative Literature], in Porto. Ângela celebrates diversity and chooses to teach language(s) with an interartistic and intercultural approach.

Course aims

To develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in routine tasks and areas of immediate relevance such as personal information, work, study and leisure activities.

Course Objectives

  • To enable students to communicate in Portuguese in simple routine tasks and on familiar topics and activities
  • To equip students with the vocabulary and grammar structures to write short simple personal letters and messages
  • To develop the reading comprehension skills for finding simple information in everyday material such as advertisements and menus
  • To help develop an insight into the culture and daily life of the Portuguese-speaking countries

Teaching methods

This course will consist of a weekly, one-hour pre-recorded lecture to be viewed by students in preparation for the once weekly tutor-led live session at the time advertised.

The real time interaction will focus on listening, speaking, grammar and the exploration of culture, and students will be encouraged to practise reading and writing skills in their own time.

Class activities, exercises, and tasks will be conducted in the target language. English will be the medium of instruction and may be used to explain new concepts, vocabulary items, grammar rules, or the methodology behind an activity.

To benefit from the course, regular preparation in advance of the class is required. In addition to the course textbook(s), there will be some additional learning resources for self-study and consolidation.Students will be encouraged to participate and have fun.

Learning outcomes

The following are brief indicators of what students should be able to do in each of the skills

Speaking (S), Listening (L), Reading (R), and Writing (W) by the end of the individual stages:

STAGE 2

S - Participate in simple prepared discussions

L - Understand simple spoken or recorded material in familiar situations

R - Understand the gist of simple texts on familiar topics

W - Write informal letters and short descriptive paragraphs

Assessment methods

Most tutors will set weekly assignments to consolidate learning and allow students to study at their own pace.  Some of these assignments, which may include testing listening and speaking skills, will count towards formally assessing the students’ progress.

In general, students are required to submit for assessment a variety of exercises and/or shorter pieces of work. They will also have the opportunity to complete one or more optional tasks to benefit from tutor feedback.

Credits gained from the successful completion of this course can count towards the Certificate of Higher education in other subjects.

Due to the continuous assessment required for language classes, students must submit one completed Declaration of Authorship form per term. CATS points cannot be awarded without the aforementioned form - Declaration of Authorship form

We will close for enrolments 7 days prior to the start date to allow us to complete the course set up.
