It is expected that after completion of this module students will be able:
- To describe the sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruption associated with developmental disorders including ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders
- To consider the bidirectional links and mechanistic pathways between disturbed sleep and affective disorders
- To demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between sleep disturbances, circadian dysregulation and psychoses
- To show an awareness of the sleep disturbances associated with substance abuse
- To describe the manifestation and pathophysiology of sleep and circadian abnormalities that are frequent in neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease
- To describe sleep disturbances associated with disorders presenting with chronic pain (e.g. cancer, fibromyalgia) and fatigue (CFS/ME)
- To understand the role of sleep in the manifestation of metabolic syndromes, and the development of obesity
