Biography

After obtaining her first-class BEd and MA in Linguistics from the University of Mosul (Iraq), Dr Ali moved to the UK where she studied for her PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of London. Since completing her PhD, she has been teaching applied translation studies, Arabic language and culture, and language policy and politics in the Arab World at various Russell Group universities. More recently, she has been a consultant for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Language Policy and Standards Team and the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

Teaching

As Director of Studies, Dr Ali is responsible for the academic oversight and quality assurance of a diverse programme of university liberal adult education in modern languages, classics, linguistics, language pedagogy and cultural studies within the Department for Continuing Education. In addition, she organises weekend and day events within the subject area of languages and cultural studies.
