Ethics the focus of Theology Summer School
Ethics - a highly relevant topic at a time when the behaviour of politicians, bankers, journalists and many others has come under public scrutiny.
This year's Theology Summer School takes a look at the whole field of Christian Ethics. Angela Tilby, Course Director says, 'This year's courses touch in some of the most intractable and vital issues affecting society and individuals. We are all involved in making moral choices - by the way we live, by the way we interact and by the way we vote. Wherever you are coming from you will find something here to challenge and inspire'.
The Theology Summer School is held at Christ Church, one of Oxford's historic colleges.
Highlights of the Summer School include Mammon's Revenge, reflecting the global financial crisis; Whatever happened to Liberation Theology?, Ethical issues in Science and Religion and Transforming Community: The Five Marks of Mission. For the literary minded there are two fascinating courses on Christian Freedom through the Eyes of Milton and Chaucer's Discussion of Ethics in the Canterbury Tales.
Speakers this year include:
- Peter Selby, former Bishop of Worcester, theologian and ethicist. Peter has written extensively on the debt crisis and leads the seminar on Mammon's Revenge.
- Keith Ward, philosopher and theologian explores The Basis of Christian Ethics.
- Henry Wansborough, translator of the Jerusalem Bible leads a seminar on The Psalms.
- Richard Burridge, New Testament scholar and author of What are the Gospels looks at Using the New Testament in Ethical Dilemmas Today.
- Jane Shaw, Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco explores the relevance of Empathy to Religious Practice and Ethical Action.
Angela Tilby says, 'We can promise a stretching, engaging and enjoyable learning experience, much recommended to clergy and to anyone concerned with the interaction of theology, life and decision making'.
The Theology Summer School runs from the 11th to the 24th August 2013.
