Art Nouveau: Entrepreneurs and the retail environment

4.5 Georges Fouquet jewellery shop by Mucha, 1900

As part of his work for the Parisian jeweller, Georges Fouquet, Mucha designed an extravagant interior for his new shop on the prestigious Rue Royale. This design was an extension of the jewellery Mucha had designed for Fouquet and his patron Sarah Bernhardt. The whole interior was fantastical, luxurious and extravagant. Every detail of the interior contributes to the overall scheme.

Thinking points:

  • Is this an archetypal Art Nouveau interior?
  • What details do you notice and how do they relate to the overall interior?
  • How does this interior relate to its function as a jewellery shop?
