Seminars
Participants are taught in small seminar groups of up to 12 students, and receive two one-on-one tutorials with their tutor.
Sunday
Seminar 1: Overall introduction to Lifespan Developmental Psychology; The identified Generations in 20th and 21st Centuries.
Seminar 2: From the “Seven Ages Of Man” (Shakespeare) to ‘Passages’ (Sheehy 1980), with Erikson’s overview of Lifespan from Infancy to Old Age as the basic frame.
Monday
Seminar 3: Young Adulthood, moving from Adolescence to Adult status.
Seminar 4: The Identity Crisis, ‘The trying 20’s’
Tuesday
Seminar 5: The necessity of resolving the issue of Intimacy vs Isolation;
Seminar 6: ‘The Catch’ 30’s ‘Not a teenager any more’.
Wednesday
Seminar 7: The first age related crisis, partnering, forming enduring relationships, deciding on children.
The dangerous years, the 40’s;
‘Mid Life’ Crisis, Not Young and not old; Generation Gap.
Seminar 8: Dealing with ’Generativity; pressure of feeling that life is passing. Approaching ‘Menopause’ in women and other biological changes.
Thursday
Seminar 9: Generativity; Refreshed or Resigned. The 50’s.
Seminar 10: Is the idea of a ‘Second Adulthood’ in contemporary society useful?
Friday
Seminar 11: Aging, towards ‘Old Age’ in contemporary society. Biological features. Dealing with physical effects awareness of life coming to an end, Legacy, inheritance.
Seminar 12: Summing up; value of a developmental view.

14.00–16.30 - Registration
16.30–17.00 - Orientation meeting
17.00–17.30 - Classroom orientation for tutor and students
17.30–18.00 - Drinks reception
18.00–20.00 - Welcome dinner
Sundays – Fridays
09.00–10.30 - Seminar
10.30–11.00 - Tea/coffee break
11.00–12.30 - Seminar
12.30–13.30 - Lunch
13.30–18.00 - Afternoons are free for tutorials, individual study, course-related field trips or exploring the many places of interest in and around Oxford.
18.00–19.00 - Dinner (There is a formal gala dinner every Friday to close each week of the programme)
A range of optional social events will be offered throughout the summer school. These are likely to include: a quiz night, visit to historic pubs in Oxford, visit to Christ Church for Evensong and after-dinner talks and discussions.
