This day school looks at the connections between language use and the construction, negotiation and maintenance of identities.
It considers how our linguistic practices shape our identities and the extent to which language can be said to reveal who we are. It considers how we build images of ourselves through language, how society moulds us into different categories based on the language we use, and how we negotiate our membership of those categories with our choice of language.
The day aims to demonstrate that when we speak, we reveal our identity through the language we use, and that language is therefore one of the most fundamental ways of establishing our identity and shaping other people’s views of who we are.
Please note: this event will close to enrolments at 23:59 BST on 29 May 2024.
