Joyce Leech Prize 2022

Congratulations to student Sally Outen (pictured centre) who has been awarded the Joyce Leech Prize for 2022.

The Prize is awarded to the student on the Certificate in English Literature deemed by examiners to have been awarded the highest marks on their first year of the course. The Prize, named after benefactor Joyce Leech (a former student of the Certificate) takes the form of a cheque in the amount of £250, along with the gift of an appropriate book.

Sally said, 'I feel immensely lucky to have had the opportunity to study towards the Certificate in English Literature through this programme. After years spent wishing I’d studied English at university, it has meant so much to be able to do so in the company of others like me, with teaching provided by a phenomenal group of tutors, and with access to Oxford’s libraries and learning resources. As this course has honed my analytical skills and introduced new texts and perspectives, I have felt as though I have come to literature afresh, with renewed delight instilled by my studies.'

'I am very grateful to Joyce and Michael Leech for the support that they have offered students such as myself; their kind affirmation has very much strengthened my resolve to move forward in academia. Joyce is an inspiration; it was wonderful to hear her speak with such fondness of her own experiences on the course, and to receive this year's Joyce Leech Prize from her. With her encouragement, I have applied to continue my studies full-time; in the meantime, I am greatly enjoying the second year of this course.'
