Student spotlight details

Secondary school history teacher, Jessica Forbes, enrolled on our part-time Diploma in English Social and Local History not only for personal enrichment but also to inspire and equip the next generation of historians in her classroom.

'Before I enrolled on the Diploma in English Social and Local History I had just finished an Undergraduate Certificate in History whilst also working as a secondary school history teacher.

'I pursued the course as it had some fascinating content and span across history from the Norman Conquest to the Modern era. I also found the allure of studying in the city of Oxford far more appealing than an online course. For me, I wanted to challenge myself and learn in more depth all the areas I teach to ensure that future generations of historians are well-informed.

'The biggest challenge I found was being disciplined to stay on topic when reading. The lecturers inspire passion in you that you don’t expect on topics that never would have previously caught my eye. The word count on assignments can also be tricky to stick to but the lecturers are very helpful with advice on what to focus on.

'I have found the content and teaching styles of the lecturers the most rewarding as I have been able to use it within my own classroom setting. The mini field trips around Oxford bring the content to life and the lecturers have so much passion for their subject you can absolutely talk their ear off whilst at lunch or the coffee breaks makes the whole course enjoyable. The ability to attend the award ceremony in Oxford brings you great pride of your achievement at the end of the two years. You will meet some fascinating peers on this course and make the most of each other's knowledge to make the course even more rewarding than just the knowledge you acquired

'Since the Diploma, I have started a Master's in Psychology of Mental Health and Wellbeing at Wolverhampton University and continued my progression within the education sector. My next step after my master's is to apply at Oxford for one of the education master's, as for me, Oxford University has been where I found my learning style is met without judgement or prejudice.

'For anyone considering taking the course, I would suggest watching or joining the course’s open event.  I would also reach out to the course director to speak through your current knowledge alongside ensuring you have time to put aside for the study outside of the weekends that take place. It is really important to set time aside for reading and focusing on the course, I wish I had done more of this. But, most of all enjoy it!'
