Talk explores translation of evidence into health care policy and practice

Professor Susan Michie will speak at Kellogg College, Thursday 6th June, 5.30-6.30 pm.

As part of a series of talks offered by the MSc in Evidence-Based Health, which is jointly delivered by the Department for Continuing Education and the Department for Primary Care Health Sciences, we are pleased to announce the following talk by Professor Susan Michie which will take place at Kellogg College.

'Translating evidence to policy and practice: the role of behavioural science'

A podcast of this talk may be heard at: http://www.podcasts.ox.ac.uk/behavioural-perspective-translating-evidence-policy-and-practice-audio

Due to the considerable investment in trials of healthcare interventions and in evidence syntheses, we have increasingly good evidence about best practice. However, much is wasted because research evidence and guideline recommendations are not implemented effectively. The result is that good quality health care and best health outcomes may not be achieved.

Interventions to improve delivery of evidence-based health care have achieved modest and variable success. Improving implementation depends on changing the behaviour of health professionals and others. However, behavioural science is seldom used to inform intervention design or evaluation.

Three problems in taking healthcare interventions from trial to practice will be outlined, illustrated by research from behavioural science:

  1. Key intervention characteristics are rarely described in sufficient detail in trial protocols and published reports to be replicated
  2. Fidelity, the extent to which interventions are delivered as stated in protocols, is seldom reported and is often poorM
  3. Theories of behaviour and behaviour change are rarely applied.

Recommendations to improve the usefulness and implementation of research findings will be presented.

The talk takes place from 5.30-6.30pm at Kellogg College, 60-62 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 6PN. Refreshments served from 5pm. Questions? cpdhealth@conted.ox.ac.uk
