Clare Vernon
Dr Clare Vernon is a specialist in the Mediterranean world in the central middle ages. She has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has taught at Birkbeck, University of London and the universities of Manchester and Southampton. Her publications focus on the art of southern Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Her book, From Byzantine to Norman Italy: Mediterranean Art and Architecture in Medieval Bari, will be published in early 2023.
Courses
Southern Italy is at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. In the Middle Ages, it was a land of Lombards, Byzantines, Jews, Arabs and Normans, pilgrims and crusaders. This course will examine this cultural crossroads through its art and architecture.
Under the Mediterranean sun, medieval artists created a visual culture that was vibrant, diverse and interconnected. This course will introduce you to the Medieval Mediterranean world through in-depth study of ten objects from across the region.
Medieval art glitters and enthrals. Medieval architecture elicits wonder and awe. In this introductory course you will learn about its breadth and diversity, from great cathedrals and imposing castles to sacred icons and subversive marginalia.
