Gothic 'artefictions': fabricating history in Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill and The Castle of Otranto.

Abstract

This paper will consider how Walpole took a common approach to these architectural and literary works, combining antiquarian scholarship and dramatic technique into an emotional and sensory recreation of the Gothic past.

Abstract

This paper will explore the relationship between Gothic and Sensational elements in English and Peninsular Spanish texts of the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, with a focus on ambiguity in relation to female insanity and criminality.
