Spanish: Intermediate - Consolidation



Overview

This 10-week consolidation course is based on the syllabus of the previous two terms (most recently - Spanish: Intermediate - Part 2 ) and is primarily tailored to meet the needs of students who completed the weekly class, but new students who are at the appropriate level of proficiency are also welcome. Students who missed some classes during the first two terms and wish to catch up for the next level up in the next academic year are encouraged to join.

The class activities will focus on listening, speaking, grammar structures and cultural awareness; and students will be encouraged to practise reading and writing skills in their own time. There will be plenty of opportunities to interact in the target language through class activities, discussions, scenarios and role-plays.

Programme details

Course starts: 24th April 2024

Week 1: Jobs and events in a person’s life. Indicative verbs, present and past.

Week 2: World’s problems. The future tense

Week 3: Customs and social codes. Impersonal form and quantifiers.

Week 4: Genres (cinema, TV, literature..). Direct and indirect object.

Week5 : Publicity and household chores. Affirmative and negative imperative

Week 6: Talking about politics and society issues. The present subjunctive.

Week 7: Talking about education. Offering solutions to problems. Modal periphrases se debería, habría que, tenemos que...

Week 8: Travels and types of tourism. Past indicative tenses.

Week 9: Expressing feelings and interests. Agreeing and disagreeing. Pronominal verbs + present subjunctive.

Week 10: Revision activities; exercises, games and quizzes.

Certification

Students who attend a minimum of 70% of classes will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Mr Esteban Cichello Hubner

Esteban Cichello-Hubner studied International Relations, Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition at Hertford College, University of Oxford and completed a teaching degree at the OU Education Department.  He then pursued his Spanish Philology studies at the University of Salamanca.  Esteban is an author and an experienced Foreign Modern Languages tutor who has taught several courses at the OUDCE.

Mr Leonardo Sanchez Gorosito

Leonardo Sagor is a native qualified Modern Foreign Languages tutor. He is originally from South America and has taught several courses at the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education throughout his career. He is also a composer, a guitar player and a talented singer. Leonardo graduated from  the University of Salamanca and obtained his PGCE at the University of Bedfordshire. He is a tireless traveller who has explored more than 50 countries. He recorded his voice for the legendary Michel Thomas language courses and is currently working on teaching Spanish through cinema.

Course aims

  • consolidate what has been learnt throughout the first two terms, and
  • revise more challenging aspects of the language that are appropriate for the level

Course Objectives

  • To enable students to communicate in Italian in a range of regularly encountered situations at work, leisure, social events and whilst traveling in Italy
  • To develop the reading comprehension skills to understand texts of everyday or job-related language
  • To equip students with the vocabulary and grammar structures to write simple texts on familiar topics
  • To develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses such as asking for a repetition or re-phrasing

Teaching methods

You will learn through a communicative teaching approach with the emphasis on actively engaging in classroom activities in the target language. These are likely to include role-plays, pair- and small group-work, and conversational practice conducted in a supportive, friendly and informal learning environment.

The course has been structured to help you primarily to develop your speaking and listening skills and to gradually gain an insight into the culture and daily life of your target language. You will also learn and practise new grammatical structures in a communicative context and will be encouraged to develop your reading and writing skills in your own time.

Assessment methods

You will be set short, optional assignments to consolidate your learning and to allow you to progress at your own pace.

Application

To earn credit (CATS points) for your course you will need to register and pay an additional £10 fee for each course you enrol on. You can do this by ticking the relevant box at the bottom of the enrolment form or when enrolling online.
