Seminars meet each weekday morning, with afternoons free for course-related field trips, individual study, or exploring the many places of interest in and around the city.
Monday
Christ and Crime: An Introduction
From Genesis to Malachi, from Matthew to Revelation, we lightly journey through the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible. Alongside scripture, we then turn to secular crime to ask why and how do we commit crime. We will examine the suggested causes of secular criminal behaviours from the social, environmental, and familial to the psychological and genetic. Where and how does scripture meet such aberrant human behaviours?
Tuesday
Evil and Suffering: Biblical and Secular Considerations
A Theodicy attempts to justify God in the face of inexplicable evil and human anguish by making certain assumptions. How can we explain the moral and natural evils which befall humanity and what place does ‘free-will’ have? How can we make sense of the conundrum of evil, suffering, and delinquency at the crossroads of faith and faithlessness?
Wednesday
Crime and the Bible
There is nothing new under the sun. Contrary to popular belief, serious crime did not begin in the USA in the 1970’s (cf. Garden of Eden!). War, human sacrifice, murder, rape, genocide, incest, kidnapping and criminal punishment – these horrors and more feature in biblical writings. But wait…all humanity is meant to made in the likeness and image of God and therefore, we must all lead a good and holy life. Well, that doesn’t appear to have worked too well. Or is it all more complicated than that?
Thursday
Biblical Bad Boys (and Girls)
Who exactly were the troublemakers of the bible? What were their behaviours and their biblical and theological significance? From scripture’s first murderer, right down to its last, with some very bad behaviours in between, we ask what purpose or hope exists for these figures and their modern equivalents. Field Trip: Oxford Christian History Tour
Friday
The King of Bad: What place (if any) for Satan in a world gone mad?
Who was Satan, and how is his journey portrayed in Scripture? Is Satan a convenient ‘out’ for bad behaviours in this world – or a constant problem for believers? Does forgiveness have a place in this debate for both the faithful and faithless? Christ and criminality may meet at the crossroads of humanity, but regardless of our beliefs, which way do we all now turn?
