Explore the origins, development, and relevance of social policy around the world today. Taking an international comparative approach, and with a clear focus on the evolution of welfare states, this course examines the theories, empirical research, and policy challenges that shape social policy across the global north and south. What is social policy, what is the welfare state, and what purpose does they serve? How do we measure and explain the evolution of social policy? From de-industrialisation and shifting family structures to the impacts of migration, climate change, and population ageing, this course investigates how social policy, and specifically welfare states, are adapting to modern challenges. With a critical look at both global similarities and local differences, this course will equip students to engage in key public and scholarly debates surrounding social policy.
This course was formerly known as “Social Policy and Welfare States in the 21st Century”.
